The Kindergarten program was developed for children who have completed at least two years in a Montessori program. In the regular preschool classrooms, the kindergarten year (typically the 3rd year) of Montessori is the culmination of all the preparation in the academic, practical life and sensorial concepts. It rounds out and completes the three-year curriculum plan of the Montessori experience.
The Kindergarten curriculum includes science and social studies enrichment. Some of the units studied are: nutrition, the human body, the solar system, the animal kingdom, the seven continents and the cultures that exist within.
The children attend their regular preschool class in the morning or afternoon and are introduced to advanced math and language works. For the morning preschoolers, after two hours in their classroom, they move down the hall to their kindergarten class for another 2-1/2 hours. For the afternoon preschoolers, they arrive 2 hours prior to the start of their preschool class, and attend kindergarten first, then move down the hall to the preschool class.
During the Kindergarten class, the children have lunch together, incorporating within this time an opportunity to learn about nutrition, grace and courtesy and cleaning up afterwards.
The Kindergarten Enrichment Program, in addition to the regular preschool class time, provides the best experience to bridge the independence and self-discipline of the freer environment characteristic of Montessori and the more demanding outward discipline of traditional education.
